Couponing 101 Day 2 What about the cashiers at the stores?

OB-DE854_coupon_DV_20090224232132Unfortunetly most cashiers don’t like to see a person coming with a handful of coupons.  But if you analyze the choices of cashiers and choose the best senerio you grocery tip will be more sucessful.  Let me start by saying, be sure when using coupons that you check these details; first, the date has not expired, second, you are buying exactly what the coupon is for, and third, it is a legit coupon.  If you do that before going to the checkout then you can be assured that the coupons should pass through ok.  Scanners sometimes don’t like coupons so the coupon will have to be hand entered.  If you get a cashier that is having a bad day, they might just reject the coupon and say it is not valid.

Picking your cashiers

There are three different types of cashiers.

  1. The young teenager. This is the best one to get in the line for.  They are happy go lucky, talkative and will be more willing to check the item out and verify that the coupon is correct.
  2. The grumpy older person that is having to work two jobs and this is their second one.  I try to avoind these lines if all possible.  You can tell who these people are.  They never have a smile on their faces. They are tired and just ready to get home to their families.  They are less likely to check the coupon out if it beeps and just hand it back to you and say it is not valid.  You can argue with the cashier but I try to avoid it if all possible.
  3. The male cashiers.  This is my second choice.  This is an adult male.  I think they really recognize what you are trying to do for your family and they appreciate that you are putting forth the effort.  They are more intriged with the savings and look forward to seeing the bottom line when you finish checking out.  The only negative is that they really don’t like to research and pull that product back out either if the coupon beeps.  Sometimes you can remind them of the product and try to findi it yourself.

The one coupon that I have the most problems with is the IP (internet printable) coupons. The worst place to take these are to Walmart.  They do accept them according to the home office.  Click here to see the statement from the home office. I think they have just drilled it in the cashier’s minds that all Ip coupons are fake.  I keep a copy of this in my coupon file incase I run into problems at Walmart.  I have only had to use it once and when the manager saw that I had it, she just said to let the coupon go through.  I try not to use the IP coupons at Walmart unless it is a GREAT big deal.

I had said in my earlier post that I was also going to write about how to get coupons.  I appoligize that it is not included in this post but I will need to post it either later today or in the morning.  Time is not on my side today :(

Have a great day!
