“FFFF” Frugal Family Fun Friday! 1.8.10

by A Thrifty Geek on 01/08/2010

Yeah it is Friday.  I am so glad.  This week has been really busy, crazy and even COLD.  It is a balmy 8 degrees outside this morning, Ryne was scheduled to have 4 games this week, Gregg’s work schedule is still not very family friendly and we had snow that slowed everything down.

The great thing about today is Gregg is off work, Ryne is out of school, Jordan doesn’t have to work and we have a free Friday night to hang out.   So what are we going to do that will stay in our budget and be fun?   Hummm….

Think back at what all your kids and you got for Christmas.  If you are like us, we have hit the ground running since Christmas and really not got to enjoy all the great items that we got.  We got a Wii as our family gift and so far as a family we have only played it once.

It is cold all over the nation this weekend(except LA) and we need to enjoy staying at home with our family.  Pull out the old games, pull out the popcorn popper, pull out the blankets and old movies.  Bring back out games and toys that you have not seen in a while or have not had time to play with.

When my kids were little, we had a popcorn popper that they just loved.  Let me share the family activity with you and maybe you can enjoy it with your family too.

See the popcorn popper to the left.  We had one of these and it was a hit.  I see these all the time at Goodwills for $3.  Grab you one.   So what is so great about popcorn?  Follow these steps and you and your children will have a blast.

*clear and area out in your living room big enough for a full size or larger sheet can lay flat in.
*Place the popcorn popper on the sheet in the middle.  You will have to have an extension cord for it to plug up.
*Pour 1/2 the oil in the popcorn popper that is required and then the popcorn.
*Place the lid back on the popcorn popper until it starts to pop.
*Remove the lid and let the fun begin.
We would sit around the sheet and either catch the pop corn with our hand and mouths or we would even play games with paper cups to see how many we could catch in our cup. Sometimes, I would say to hold the cup on your head and sometimes it was just how ever many you could catch while sitting down.

For safety reason, please have your child sitting on the edge of the sheet.  For two reason, you don’t want them to get burned if they get too close and also the oil will pop a little when the popcorn is popping. If they sit on the edges, they should be fine.

Enjoy this weekend at home as most of us are having to endure the cold weather.  Make the most of it in your home and make memories while doing it.
