How to not waste your money at the movies or on movie rentals

by A Thrifty Geek on 03/01/2010

We rented two movies this weekend to watch.  One was excellent and the other one had to be turned off within 5 minutes of it starting due to the content.
What really stinks is we wasted our money on renting it.  I am glad it was just a rental instead of having to walk out of a $7 movie theater.

I have been introduced to a couple of sites that I wanted to share with you.

  • Kids In Mind   This is a site that ranks the movies.  They have a 0 – 10 ranking on nudity, language & Violence.  The great feature about this site is that it even tells you where the nudity is (top of body, bottom of body, arm, leg, etc ), how many times a word is used and the type of violence.  The detail on the nudity is something that I have not found in many other sites.  Nudity for some is not as of a big deal as maybe to others.  I really want to know what I am going to be exposed to before I start a movie, and especially guarding my children’s eyes.   This site is a paid site but it is only $12 a year for this service.  I think that is very reasonable for the protection you are getting.
  • Plugged In.  This is a focus on the family site.    This site is a free site that gives a great review.  It doesn’t go into as much detail as Kids in Mind but it does give a great overview of the movie as well as the Spiritual implications that the movie might have.  Another plus about Plugged In is that it reviews games, music, TV & videos also.  This is one that I have visited often for reviews.   I trust Focus on the Family’s view.
  • Christian Answers.  This is a non-profit site that give an overview and their opinion of the movies.  I like this site for a quick look at the movie and also get an opinion of the movie.  This site is free from what I have seen also but not as indepth as the other two mentioned.

With the reviews coming out so quickly, we have no excuse if we plan to check out the movies before we spend money on seeing them.  Wasting your time, money and integrity is something that I am sure you don’t want to do if you can help it.

Check out the sites above and bookmark them for the future.

Just a side note.  We watched the movie,  The soloist.  Excellent movie with Jamie Fox playing the homeless man  & Robert Downey Jr.playing a L.A. Times writer.  I highly recommend it for you and your spouse to watch.  It is fine for teens to watch also.  It does have some language in it.  You can check out the review here.

Great Tips!! We rent movies via Blockbuster Total Access… and I hate when we end up with a movie that we can’t even make it through the first scene! Such a waste! Plugged-In is a great site and I’m always listening to Plugged-In reviews on our Christian radio station. Thanks for linking to Thrifty Tip Tuesday!
