I love Spring. I love the thought of Spring, I love the way Spring makes me feel. I grew up in a home that my father almost every year had a garden of some sort. It might be a small one or some years it was a large one but we always had fresh home grown veggies in the summer.
Along with that, I grew up with my mother canning and freezing the veggies. The panty and freezer would be full of great vegetables that we all loved. I think they did this for 2 reasons, one being they loved working in the garden and putting up the bounty and the second is they realized how much it saved them financially to grow their own food.
In 2009 (last summer) an estimated 7 million people tried their hands at gardening. They started their first vegetable garden. They didn’t do it because they all decided they wanted to have green thumbs, they did it because they realized it would save their family money as well still give them the fresh vegetables that they needed.
I was one of them that took my garden to another level last year. I did a raised garden and loved it. I had always done planter box gardens that would hold a tomato plant, a cucumber plant and maybe a couple of favorite herbs. This past year I followed the square foot garden method and created a great little garden.
I am going to start walking you through what you would need to do to get you alittle garden going that will provided for your family and also cut down on those grocery bills. So starting today, here is what you need to do this next week to start getting prepared.
- locate a place in your yard that gets good sun all day long.
- Get a small notebook to keep your ideas & information in.
- choose 5-7 vegetables that you enjoy eating and write them in your notebook.
- talk with you family about the garden and the reasons why you want to do one this year. Make this a family event.
- Look in your utility shed and see what tools you have already. You will need: a watering can, shovel, spade, twine, and a few other items that I will share later.
This week just start getting the idea together that you want to start a garden to help your family. Just think, you can have fresh veggies for your family at a low cost and even be organic if you would like.
